Artist Statement:

As a child I loved to paint, and this love led me to earn a degree in Fine Arts. In the last few years, I returned to ceramics after a decades-long absence. Clay made sense to me the second time around, and suddenly I was able to throw pots. My newfound skills needed surface treatment, so I began to approach the Moorish aesthetic, which is full of dazzling patterned tiles, color, and archways. I fell in love with Spain in high school, when the Olympics were in Barcelona, and I never got to explore the Islamic art form on my own until I revisited pottery. My approach couldn't be precise like the traditional Islamic art, so I developed a gestured geometry to capture the essence of the exquisite art form. Imagine freehand geometry: this wouldn't work in real life, yet in art it has given me so much room to traverse.
