Artist Statement:

Based outside Washington, DC, studio jeweler Jowita Allen transforms discarded plastics, industrial rubber, and other non-biodegradable waste into lightweight, playful, and sustainable jewelry. Drawing inspiration from her upbringing in Poland during the communist era, where reusing materials was often a necessity, Allen developed an early appreciation for resourcefulness and creative transformation. She later expanded her understanding of sustainability while studying Cultural Anthropology at the University of Frankfurt in Germany and refined her artistic practice at the Corcoran School of the Arts and Design at George Washington University.

Allen challenges conventional ideas of jewelry as a symbol of material wealth and status. Instead, she elevates overlooked and discarded materials, giving them new life as contemporary wearable art. Her work explores themes of value, consumption, and environmental responsibility, encouraging viewers to reconsider their relationship with everyday objects and the impact of single-use plastics on our world.
