Fiber

Catherine O'Sullivan

Artist Statement:

My work is a personal dialogue with the natural world, intentionally quiet, subtle, and abstract. I start with hand-felted wool – an arrangement of loose fibers that I coax from a delicate, unpredictable state to one that is structured and solid through the application of water, soap, and pressure. Integrating other natural fibers, dyes, and pigments into this process allows me to replicate the organic forms, textured surfaces, and complex hues I find in nature. Vessels have become my preferred form of expression for their practical function and symbolic significance – they hold things precious to us.
