Artist Statement:
My pieces are wheel thrown, hand painted, and low fired with layered matte glazes and slips. I am fascinated by plants (undergrad in Botany) and my simple forms and quiet surfaces hold botanic, aquatic, and abstract imagery. The blossom is the unique way we identify a plant as of a species and the means for the plant to get the message to pollinators: this display is her “come hither” move.
My new line of primitive-fired pieces uses soluble metals (iron, copper, silver) to coax ghost images from leaves and other plant matter. These pieces tend to be far more subtle than my other highly graphic pieces, and the excitement of the firing process keeps me experimenting.
